Bardenas Reales, Navarra – a scene from Game of Thrones

Game of thrones is surely popular right now. Although I have to confess that I’ve only watched 2 episodes of it. 😅

The thing is that a friend told me that one of the scenes was filmed in Bardenas Reales. So I decided to write a post about it and take the opportunity to show you this stunning place.

Bardenas Reales is a semi-desert natural region of some 42,500 hectares in southeast Navarre (Spain). It’s declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO.

The soils are made up of clay, chalk and sandstone and have been eroded by water and wind creating surprising shapes. Depending on when you go, whether it has rained or not, you can find a totally different landscape.

It just looks like a dessert!!! I would never had imagined that such a place could exist in Spain.

You can find different areas and the main ones are Bardena White and Black. All of them of free entrance.

There are signposted routes that you can travel on foot, by bicycle, on horseback or with motor vehicles.

In my case, I went twice to Bardena White because is easy to access by car. If you don’t have much time, take this route because it’s only 1-2 hours.

Tip: check the weather before going! If it has rained recently, I don’t advise you to go unless you (or your car) don’t mind getting all muddy … And don’t forget to bring food or eat before going, as you will find yourself in the middle of nowhere.
